Compared with western countries such as US, Chinese government provides comprehensive support for stem cell research. There are two projects on stem cell research within total 19 projects in the National Basic Research Program of China (973 Program). QMLC is the cooperation unit in National 863 stem cell project.
There is a national code for regulation and management of stem cell research issued by Ministry of Science and Technology and Ministry of Health of PRC.
According to this policy, every local institute should have a special supervisory committee consisting of experts in biology, medicine, law and ethics. Since there are no strict limitations on researchers in human embryonic stem cells, the corresponding research in China is straightforward and there are more and more researchers engaged in this field. It is possible for China to supply embryonic stem cells for other countries. China is becoming the leader in clinical research with stem cells in the world.
In recent years stem cells have become one of the hottest research fields in China. The hospitals cooperated with QMLC have published 16 papers in clinical research on stem cells. QMLC has applied for 37 patents related in stem cells, which is No.1 in corresponding fields in China. Total 61 species of stem cells have been developed in QMLC, which covers all kinds of stem cells and is No.1 in the world in terms of amount of the species. QMLC is benefited from China¡¯s policies on stem cells.
